War Dogs

Honoring the Airedale Terrier's military service.
Story, Art and Donation by Ann Curran.

the original photo

Here’s what Ann writes about the print:

I found the photograph of the WWI Army dogs in Edwin Richardson's book "Forty years with Dogs". The photo was very small but the dogs so beautiful, and I was sad about the type of work we asked them to do for us. Many families gave up their (then popular) Airedale for the war effort. Richardson worked with the dogs ... training them by only offering food during gunfire, artillery noise.  Many dogs learned to disregard the gunfire in order to eat, and those went on to be Soldiers ... or "weapons" as I believe the army classified them.

Sorting out the collection of collars and leads in the tiny photo wasn't easy ... some dogs are in fact wearing two.

I wanted to honour these brave dogs. I gave them back their colour.
